Frequently Asked Questions
Our FAQ page has all the answers you need to better understand chiropractic care and how it can transform your health.
Chiropractic care is a hands-on approach that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and function well. It focuses on the nervous system, joints, and muscles — and how they all work together to support your everyday movement and well-being.
No, you do not need to be in pain to see a chiropractor. Many athletes and active individuals visit chiropractors to enhance their performance, improve mobility, and prevent injuries. Regular chiropractic care can help optimize your body’s function, reduce the risk of injury, and support your overall lifestyle and athletic goals.
Your first visit includes a detailed consultation, assessment, and where appropriate, treatment. We look at how your whole body is moving and functioning — not just the spine. Ongoing visits are tailored to your needs and goals.
Yes, chiropractic care is widely considered to be safe when performed by a qualified and licensed chiropractor. It is a research-supported, non-invasive, and drug-free approach to managing a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those related to the spine, joints, and nervous system.
Chiropractors are trained to assess each patient individually and to apply techniques that are appropriate for their specific condition, age, and health status. Techniques such as spinal adjustments are evidence-basedand are generally very well tolerated. In fact, chiropractic care is recommended in many international clinical guidelines as a first-line approach for conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and certain types of headaches.
As with any form of healthcare, there may be some risks involved, but these are generally very low and side effects, if any, are usually mild and temporary—such as soreness or stiffness.
Dr. Gillian Johnston follows international best practices and clinical guidelines to ensure that every treatment is safe, appropriate, and tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
That depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people come in for short-term relief, while others choose regular care to support long-term performance and wellness. We’ll always discuss a care plan that works best for you.

To become a chiropractor, one must complete an intensive and specialized educational program focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions related to the spine, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system.
Dr. Gillian Johnston holds a Master’s Degree in Chiropractic from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, one of the few institutions offering an internationally accredited chiropractic program. This comprehensive qualification involves a minimum of six years of university study, covering subjects such as anatomy, physiology, neurology, radiology, orthopaedics, and chiropractic techniques, along with extensive clinical internship experience.
In addition to her Master's degree, Dr. Johnston has completed postgraduate education in sports chiropractic and holds the International Certificate in Sports Chiropractic (ICSC), awarded by the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS). This advanced qualification equips chiropractors to work with athletes at all levels, from amateur to elite, with a focus on performance, injury prevention, and recovery.
It is also important to note that there is currently no chiropractic education program available in the Netherlands. As a result, all practicing chiropractors in the Netherlands, including Dr. Johnston, have completed their training abroad. This international background ensures that chiropractors meet globally recognized standards of professional education and clinical excellence.
